Prof Cheng is a world-renowned expert on flow/structure/seabed interactions, leader of an influential multidisciplinary research team and an energetic facilitator of technology transfer for industry. He has instigated new design guidelines, transforming practice and enabling significant reduction in the environmental footprint of offshore pipelines and cables - key infrastructure for oil/gas and renewable energy. He has exercised high level leadership and management, in Australia as Head of School at UWA, and in China with his appointment as Director of the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering.
