AO FTSE
Dr David Cook, winner of the ATSE President's Medal for 2025, is celebrated this year in recognition of his efforts to modernise the Fellowship elections. He is a former member of the ATSE Council, Board and Vice-President Membership. He has reviewed hundreds of Fellowship nominations over more than 13 years involved in the Fellow election process. He played an instrumental role in helping modernise and improve the processes for the election of new Fellows, thereby helping to shepherd in a new era of diverse, talented and impactful Fellows into the Academy.

2024 Winner
A neuroscience researcher who went on to become Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Professor Lyn Beazley has been deeply involved in Australian science, innovation and technology for many decades. She played an important role in the development of ATSE’s modern governance processes, and has been an active champion of the IMNIS program since its inception as an idea out of WA. Her promotion of STEM within political, scientific, educational and lay communities has helped drive the uptake of new technologies and innovations across society.
She was elected in 2009 and has been involved in the Education, Water and Energy Forums in her time as a Fellow. She spent many years as a member of the Membership Committee, the International Steering Group and the Clunies Ross Awards Committee, and continues to advocate for science and equity with a special focus on getting young people into STEM.

2023 Winner
Peter Laver AM FTSE has been an integral part of ATSE’s progress as a modern Academy. A previous Vice President, Peter played a leading role in developing the agile and future-focused Board and Assembly structure that exist today, which pays respect to the Academy’s origins and traditions. After his tenure as Vice President, he became a Senior Advisor to the Academy and has contributed to several Strategic Plans, policy documents, submissions and Government Inquiries.
Peter was elected in 1992 in recognition of his dedication to fostering industry and academic collaboration through his various managerial roles at BHP over 40 years. He has held many positions as chair and advisor. In 2005, he received a Member of the Order of Australia for service to Industry, Tertiary education and training, and Science and Technology.
As a lifelong learner, he is an advocate for investment in training and education.

Dr Joanne Daly PSM FTSE was awarded the 2022 ATSE President’s Medal in recognition of her extraordinary commitment and exceptional contribution to the Academy. Dr Daly has served as Chair of ATSE’s Assembly and Chair of the ACT Division. As a member of the Agriculture and Food Forum, she has contributed to major policy reports on climate change and agricultural futures. Dr Daly is a champion for change in ATSE’s governance and membership strategies, and her contributions have shaped ATSE for the better.
