For outstanding contributions to the development and commercialisation of laser systems for space sciences and defence. Specifically Dr Gao developed space debris tracking systems which are now the key part of Australia’s sovereign space situation awareness capability; he developed a worldclass laser ranging system leading to a new technology business with a contract value now exceeding 2B$; and recently field-demonstrated an Australian sovereign laser Directed Energy (DE) counter drone system to better protect Australia.
