Dr Sue Barrell AO FTSE is a highly accomplished executive, science leader, chair and director. She retired from Bureau of Meteorology in 2018 after a career culminating in executive roles in technology, data, science and innovation. She contributed significantly to national and international collaborative efforts in climate science/policy, integrated earth observations, data infrastructure and data policy. Through board and advisory roles across science, technology and education, Sue delivers highly valued outcomes for society and the environment. She is committed to empowering girls and women in science and leadership, and enjoys sharing experiences with and mentoring those at earlier career stages.

Sue Barrell is a world leader in weather and climate observation technologies and a widely respected authority on international climate change monitoring and research. She has been the driving force in the modernisation of Australia's meteorological observing systems and networks involving automatic weather stations, ocean buoys, advanced Doppler radars and satellite ground stations. She has led the introduction of many new cutting-edge observing technologies. In an international liaison capacity, she has played a pre-eminent role in the planning and implementation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and contributed to Australia's leadership status in many aspects of international Earth observation. She is a senior executive at the Bureau of Meteorology.
