Dr Rod Hill is internationally recognised for his contributions to both scientific knowledge and technological applications of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques.

He has solved many difficult problems of solid state chemistry. His advances in the full-profile (Rietveld) powder diffraction technique have led directly to its worldwide application to precise quantitative phase analysis of mixtures of crystalline solids.

His analytical methods for quality control in lead/acid battery manufacture have been commercialised and widely adopted.

As Chief of the CSIRO Minerals Division, he uses innovative management techniques to stimulate scientific creativity while maintaining commercial and market focus.
