Dr Mudge became well known in Australian scientific and engineering circles soon after his appointment in 1981 to head the VLSI Program for CSIRO. In the two years or so since then, his energy and efforts have had a remarkable effect in introducing some 150 practising engineers and scientists to the modern techniques of complex microelectronic design. In addition, his research group has become a leading centre for research in computer-aided design.

This citation is not based solely on these recent achievements, however. Prior to his return to Australia, he played a key role, in the USA, with the Digital Equipment Corporation, in the development of the well ?known PDP-11 and VAX-11 computers.

Dr Mudge has numerous publications, patents and conference presentations to his credit, of which details are attached.
