As Minister for Science 1983-1990
(combined with various other Ministerial duties, including technology in 1983-84), he was responsible for the most substantial restructuring and redirection of CSIRO in the Organisation's history.
Barry Jones was a major influence in the production of the May 1989 Science Statement and the setting up of the Prime Minister's Science Council.

Since returning to the backbench, he has chaired the House of Representatives Committee for Long Term Strategies and been elected to the Board of Governors of UNESCO.
