Professor Tony Haymet was appointed Australia’s Chief Scientist in January 2025. After an Academic career of teaching, research and supervising PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, Haymet assumed leadership roles at CSIRO Marine & Atmospheric Research, and at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. He co-founded ocean robot company MRV Systems LLC, manufacturing in Chicago, Seattle and San Diego. He has volunteered as Chair of the Antarctic Science Foundation (Hobart) and Vice-Chair of Worldfish (Penang).
Dr Haymet's leadership has focused on building science and research capability, initiating globally significant collaborations, and strengthening national and global research partnerships. He co-founded Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System, the Western Australian Marine Science Institution, CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Flagship, and the Quantitative Marine Science Program with UTAS. He has championed safe, diverse workplaces and the value of experimental data, actively communicated science through the world.
Haymet has assembled teams to construct research buildings and ships. His team won the “design-build-operate” contract for the 73-metre USA research vessel AGOR 28 delivered to Scripps on 1 July 2016, following a four-year design/build process by shipbuilder Dakota Creek Industries (Anacortes, WA). Haymet secured its permanent name as RV Sally Ride. As Director and Vice-Chancellor of Scripps, Haymet oversaw operation of a fleet of four research vessels and the unique crewed spar buoy “FLIP”.
