King’s Birthday Honours recognise achievements of leading technologists

ATSE is thrilled to celebrate our exceptional Fellows recognised in today’s 2024 King’s Birthday Honours.

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) is thrilled to celebrate our exceptional Fellows recognised in today’s 2024 King’s Birthday Honours. 

This year, Professor Thomas Maschmeyer AO FTSE FAA and Professor John Skerritt AM FTSE have been awarded Orders of Australia for their contributions to applied science in the public benefit over many years.  
 
ATSE President Dr Katherine Woodthorpe said, “On behalf of ATSE, I would like to sincerely congratulate Professor Maschmeyer and Professor Skerrit on being recognised in today’s honours. Their unwavering commitment to advancing technology and engineering, in the public sphere as well as through research and commercialisation has had a tremendous impact. These honours are a testament to their dedication and exceptional contributions to our society.” 

Professor Maschmeyer has received the Officer of the Order (AO) for his service to science as a researcher, innovator and educator, and business through pioneering commercial technologies. His innovative contributions to green chemistry have paved the way for more eco-friendly industrial processes.

Professor Skerritt has received the Member of the Order (AM) for significant service to public health administration and governance, and to scientific research. He left a lasting legacy in his previous role with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, leading the rapid registration of COVID vaccines, implementing the Medicines and Medical Devices Review, and harmonising international regulation. 

The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC(Retd) FTSE said, “I would like to congratulate all those recognised in today’s Honours List. Some names are well-known, but the vast majority are not – they are people who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a difference in our community.”
